This is not a story about everything going smoothly. It is about what you can actually do when a flight is cancelled at short notice and the destination's clearance office is about to close for the weekend.

Before departure: the Friday flight was cancelled

The scheduled Friday flight could not carry pets because the hold had no air-conditioning. This was not a paperwork problem — it was a hardware condition that no amount of document checking could have predicted.

The options were limited. Rerouting to the next flight meant the cats would land after the destination's pet clearance office had closed, and it does not open at weekends. In other words, forcing a weekend arrival would leave the cats in their crates for three days before clearance could be completed. For a cat that is not merely uncomfortable; it is a genuine health risk.

What we did

First, we did not force it. Once the timings had been worked through, flying at the weekend was ruled out rather than gambled on. Second, we arranged immediate boarding: Dr. Tommy freed up a separate room so the cats could move freely instead of staying crated while they waited. Third, we reduced their stress — they were tense at first, so we used treats to help them settle into the new space. Fourth, we rebooked: since the local authority also closed early on Mondays, we moved them to a Monday pre-dawn flight so clearance could be completed the moment they landed, with no further waiting. Throughout the boarding period we logged appetite, energy and litter box output every day.

Outcome

The cats flew, cleared customs on arrival and got home safely.

What this case is really about

The odds of a pet being offloaded are small, but it does happen. What makes the difference is whether someone makes a decision immediately — keep waiting, or switch to a safer route. That comes down to local support capacity and knowing how the destination's clearance hours actually work. The practical lesson: decide fast, but never trade the animal's welfare for speed.
