Siu Bak, a puppy, and Wu Wu, a cat, were moving to Toronto together. The difficulty here was not one animal's paperwork — it was that the transport requirements for the two species are completely different while the timetable had to be identical.

Before departure: different rules, one flight

Dogs and cats have different crate standards, ventilation and space requirements, and airlines handle hold allocation differently for each species. Arrange them separately and you easily end up with one leaving while the other waits weeks — which, for a family, also means extra boarding and transfer arrangements.

Stress management for the cat also has to start early. Cats are particularly sensitive to environmental change, and without a gradual introduction to the crate and the move, the pressure of a long-haul flight rises noticeably.

What we did

We matched IATA-compliant crates to each animal by breed and body size; coordinated the dog's and the cat's seats with the airline so they could depart in the same batch; completed Canada's import documents, including the microchip, rabies vaccination proof and health certificate; and arranged the transfer after clearance, straight to the new home.

Outcome

Siu Bak and Wu Wu both arrived in Toronto safely and started their new life there.

Three things owners miss when a dog and a cat travel together

First, a cat's crate space and ventilation requirements are nothing like a dog's, so a single standard will not do. Second, the document validity windows for the two animals may not match, so the timetable has to follow the tightest one. Third, in the first week after arrival it is worth keeping them in separate spaces and introducing them gradually, which reduces stress for both.
