"A multi-cat household — not one left behind." Moving back to Hong Kong needs the same paperwork as emigrating, but for a household with four cats the difficulty is not each cat's forms. It is doing all four in step.

Before departure: the hard part is synchronising, not the paperwork

All four cats had to complete health checks, documents and transport on one timetable and in one batch. If a single cat's paperwork or vaccination timing is wrong, it can drag the whole family's departure — and with a lease, a moving date and flights already fixed, there is very little slack.

Another thing easily missed: the validity windows of different animals' documents do not always match. Vaccination dates, health certificate issue dates and the departure date have to be checked cat by cat, and the timetable then built around the tightest of them.

What we did

We reconciled all four cats' microchips, vaccination records and health certificates into a single timetable; coordinated hold space with the airline so all four could travel in the same batch rather than waiting on separate flights; aligned the UK pre-departure veterinary checks and export documents with Hong Kong's import requirements item by item; and handled clearance on arrival so all four were returned to the owner together.

Outcome

All four cats flew from the UK to Hong Kong safely and were handed back to the owner in one go.

How much lead time does a multi-pet move need?

Generally, the more animals, the longer the preparation — not because the paperwork is more complex, but because flight seats, hold space and the customs declaration all have to be coordinated at once. In peak season, booking late makes a split departure much more likely. Re-entering Hong Kong is not paperwork-free either: Hong Kong has specific quarantine arrangements for imported pets.
